UK-SPEC or the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence and Commitment explains the registration requirements. All the registration titles need the demonstration of five wide areas of competence and commitment:

- Knowledge and understanding
- Responsibility, management and leadership
- Professional commitment
- Communication and interpersonal skills
UK-SPEC Chartered Engineer (CEng) eligibility criteria:
A Chartered Engineer (CEng) develops solutions to engineering issues with new or existing technologies, through creativity and change. They may also bear the accountability for complicated systems with high levels of risk.
Required Eligibility:
Anyone can attain the CEng title, but they need to show the necessary professional competencies and commitment. These competencies and commitment lie in the UK-SPEC requirements. An individual develops these through education and work experience.
The application process to become a Chartered Engineer is more straightforward for the candidate has exemplifying academic qualifications. For a Chartered Engineer, this is one of the following:
A bachelor’s degree, with Honours, in engineering or technology, recognized for CEng. Besides that, you need an appropriate and recognized master’s degree or Engineering Doctorate (EngD). Instead of that, appropriate further learning to Master’s level is also acceptable.
A recognized integrated MEng degree

If you gained academic qualifications that were accredited exemplifying qualifications for CEng, then these are still regarded as being so. However, the condition is that they were exemplifying qualifications when you earned them.
Candidates having the exemplifying qualifications become automatically qualified for interim registration.

Eligibility criteria for Incorporated Engineer (IEng):
You can earn an IEng title by showing the necessary professional competencies and commitment as provided in the UK-SPEC. An individual usually develops this through education and work experience.
The application process for the Incorporated Engineer registration is more straightforward for the candidate has exemplifying academic qualifications. For an IEng, this is one of the following:
A recognized Bachelor’s or Honours degree in engineering or technology
A recognized HNC or HND in engineering or technology (for programs that began before Sept 1999)
An HND or HNC is necessary that began after Sept 1999 (but before Sept 2010 in the case of the HNC). Instead of this, a Foundation Degree in engineering or technology, plus appropriate further learning to a degree level is necessary
An approved SVQ4 or NVQ4 is necessary for a licensed engineering institution. Apart from that, appropriate further learning to the level of a degree

Candidates having the exemplifying qualifications automatically become eligible for interim registration.

Eligibility criteria for Engineering Technician:
Anybody can have EngTech registration. The condition for this is that the candidate has to show the necessary professional competency and commitment.
Generally, an applicant will have completed a Modern/Advanced Apprenticeship or other work based on a learning program. The program must have approval from their professional engineering institution.
Or, alongside appropriate work experience, they will have:
- An accepted qualification by a licensed professional engineering institution in engineering or construction set at level 3 (or above) in the Qualifications and Credit Framework/National Qualifications Framework for England and Northern Ireland; instead of that at level 6 (or above) in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework; or at level 3 (or above) in the Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales;
- Or equally accepted qualifications by a licensed professional engineering institution
An application without formal qualifications may also apply for EngTech registration. For that, they need to show that they have attained the necessary competency through substantial working experience.
