Do you know how it feels to be trapped in a box with no way to come out of it? Well, that’s how I felt throughout my teenage life. Trapped in a body to which I do not belong. In short, I never associated with my assigned gender.

I was not always Shreya, born as Nitish; this is my life story of how I took control of my life despite many hurdles.

Society And Construction

It is not about being born in an orthodox family; coming out of the closet will shock anyone, and my family was already very narrow-minded. They had a set of ideologies that they firmly believed in, and a son who did not feel like a son was never in their book of doctrine.

So it was very much given that we had a lot of disputes. When I was 18 years old, I finally decided to go out and seek help somewhere else, which I did not get through my whole life, by the way. Meeting with people who were a little more accepting of such situations or people who had the same experience was a breakthrough for me. There I learned my options for a  male to female surgery. I obviously knew about it from the beginning but have never met someone who has undergone one. Talking to him made me think about my options, and I finally decided to undergo gender-affirming surgery.

I couldn’t ignore my family’s existence, so I gathered up all my courage and told them about my decision one day. No, they were not ecstatic, to say the least.

Society is rigid; we already know that- they have formed a set of instructions for each one of us, wanting us to be in that box no matter what. But what really hurts is your family dishonoring you because of your gender orientation.

Cost: A Big Factor

Many would not be aware that the cost of female into Male surgery varies from male to female. We, too, learned about it when my friend and I decided to go out and seek help from a private hospital. We had our funds as we have been preparing for this opportunity for ages.
