The Master (2020)
The Movie: I knew it was coming, but post-pandemic horror has already arrived in the form of a muzak gone very, very wrong. During quarantine, a group of friends meets in an online chat room. Themoviesflix what follows is a short, sharp, and terrifying 56 minutes of adrenaline-fueled found footage. The Host isn’t the first computer horror film to take inspiration from REC, The Blair Witch Project, and Paranormal Activity, but it delivers a dangerous dive into a nightmare nonetheless. Why it’s scary: Every interaction is painfully familiar, from the parents refusing to stay home to the problems caused by the trap. And when these women light candles and something appears where they should be safe, it’s hard not to be drawn in. The innovative use of modern technology makes this the perfect horror film of 2020, and the excellent direction raises the bar for horror films. If director Rob Savage can make a film like this without personally talking to the actors behind closed doors, it will be very interesting to see what he does next.
Saw (2004)
The movie: But – and it’s a big “but” – the original Saw isn’t as disgusting as you might think, and it’s also a great horror movie. Sure, the film’s title refers to a device that a depraved killer uses to encourage someone to grab hold of his leg rather than using a key to unlock handcuffs, but “Jigsaw” is actually surprisingly soothing. Themoviesflix the ideas here are much scarier in your own head than on the screen. Shot on a very low budget by Lee Whannell and James Wan, the film tells the complex but still gripping story of two men who wake up in the bathroom to find a dead body.
Why it’s scary: We all play “puzzles” with our heroes. What are we willing to do to save our own pathetic lives? Will we be Amanda and be willing to grab ourselves by the throat to find the key, or will we stay put and wait for a terrible fate? Add the true terror of “Billy,” a painted doll on a Jiggo bike, and one of the scariest long jump sequences ever, and “Saw” still manages to sting with barbed wire.
The Birds (1963)
The movie: Yes, it’s about rainstorms and murder – ed. note: we know it’s not all “talk,” and Hitchcock’s Psycho is a true horror masterpiece – but it’s time to talk about the feathered elephant in the room. “The Birds,” a loose adaptation of thriller master Daphne du Maurier’s short story of the same name, is horror cinema at its best. Themoviesflix when Melanie Daniels, played by Tippi Hedren, travels to Bodega Bay to drop off a pair of inseparable birds, she gets much more than she bargained for when the town’s wild-winged inhabitants decide that human eyes are as good as discarded potato chips.

How do you feel about the idea of seemingly innocent birds in your neighborhood using those tiny splinters to plot and kill you on the spot? Absolutely not. If you haven’t seen it, it would be a spoiler to continue. “The Birds” contains gradual, underlying emotions of fear, patience, and impending horror. The genuine panic in Hedren’s eyes as real birds descend on her is also a terrifying sight. You can be sure that no one will ever make a film like this again.
“Dawn of the Dead” (1978)
The Movie: Choosing just one of Romero’s undead films for a list of the best horror movies ever is like attacking a horde of whoremongers with a sledgehammer: gory and difficult, but not entirely impossible. After much deliberation, it was time to store around. Romero’s bloody assault on America’s consumer dream follows four survivors of the zombie apocalypse as they arrive at a large shopping mall. And although they manage to get inside without anything sticking in their brains, the mall’s beacon soon attracts other visitors and its defenses begin to crumble in a gruesome fashion.
Why it’s scary: Since Romero’s first film, there have been more hungry hordes than you can count, but that doesn’t make the source material any less terrifying to watch. The subtle idea that zombies continue to roam the mall after they are dead is insidious, and the relentless violence of the sequel “Night” is an experience that demands your attention. Themoviesflix tom Savin’s wonderfully practical effects also give you value for money as skin and muscle rip. If you feel you can’t watch anything but HD quality, Zack Snyder’s 2004 remake is a surprisingly effective, if not terrifying, substitute.
“Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Synopsis: If “Scream” revived the fun of teen horror movies, then Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are to blame for bringing the good zombies back to cinema screens. The first film in Edgar Wright’s trilogy, Shaun of the Dead, tells the story of Shaun, who survives in his dystopian London but discovers (surprisingly late) that most of the inhabitants have turned into walking cannibals while he sleeps. Suddenly he realizes that he has to be the hero everyone deserves and that it’s time to save his mother, get his girlfriend back, and make sure everyone is safe and has time for tea. Unfortunately, things don’t go quite as planned.
Why it’s scary: “Shaun of the Dead” is a real horror film. A Romero-style film, with a horde of slow-moving zombies, so that their inactivity is a constant source of fear, although mitigated by a brilliant comic script. And it’s not just the secondary characters who are torn apart by the explosion of negativity. Every character is important here, which means every zombie you meet is important. Add to that a fantastic soundtrack, great acting, and more red than you can throw at cricket, and Shaun of the Dead becomes a masterpiece of comedic horror.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Themoviesflix in No sharp knives that could pierce your chest at any moment… Freddy, played by Robert Englund, may be scary, but the idea of falling asleep and never waking up again is what’s truly frightening here. Nancy, played by Heather Langenkamp, and her friends try to stay awake to survive. No caffeine or loud music will save you, dreams are waiting, and in the darkness lurks a madman who wants to end your life. Yes, the whole movie is worth watching just for Johnny Depp’s impressive death scene, but “A Nightmare on Elmo Street” is not a movie you can sleep through.
