Layette
A layette is a collection of clothing for a newborn child. The term “layette set” is commonly used in the United States to refer to gift sets of baby clothes.
Traditionally, women would hand-sew their baby’s clothes during their pregnancy. Today “layette” is often used to identify a baby clothing section of a store. The term can also be used for bedding, accessories, and baby care items.
Basic layette items include:
· a going-home-from-the-hospital outfit
· legless sleepwear (sleeping gowns / kimonos / sleeping bags / newborn sacques / blanket sleepers) or footed sleepers
· onesies (short-sleeved, legless bodysuits) / all-in-ones / rompers / coveralls
· undershirts / T-shirts
· receiving blankets
· swaddling blankets
· hooded towels
· baby washcloths
· socks / booties
· hats / beanies / sweaters / bunting (depending on the climate)
· burp cloths (cloth diapers are often recommended)
The amount of each item needed varies by the recipient and is mostly a matter of willingness to do laundry.
T-shirt
A T-shirt (or tee shirt) is a shirt, usually buttonless, collarless, and pocketless, with a round neck and short sleeves, that is pulled on over the head and covers most of a person’s torso. The sleeves of the T-shirt extend at least slightly over the shoulder but not completely over the elbow. A shirt that is either longer or shorter than this ceases to be a T-shirt, at least in the classic sense.
T-shirts are typically made of cotton or polyester fibers (or a mix of the two), knitted together in a jersey stitch that gives a T-shirt its distinctive soft texture. T-shirts are often decorated with text and/or pictures.
T-shirt fashions include styles for men and women, and for all age groups, including baby, youth, and adult sizes.
BiB
A bib is a garment worn hanging from the neck on the chest to protect clothing from spills. It may be made of cloth, plastic, or other materials. Bibs are frequently used by children but also by some adults. During pregnancy, some women choose to wear a bib while eating.
The term bib may also refer to the part of a garment that covers the chest. For instance, an apron that covers the chest may be referred to as a bib apron. The part of a jumper dress or an overall that covers the chest may also be referred to as a bib.
Diapers
diaper (in North America) or nappy (in the British Isles and many Commonwealth countries) is an absorbent garment worn by individuals who are incontinent, that is, lack control over bladder or bowel movements, or who are unable to reach the toilet when needed. This group primarily includes infants and young children, as well as some elderly people, some with a physical or mental disability, and people working in extreme conditions, e.g. NASA astronauts.
Clothing
Clothing is defined, in its broadest sense, as coverings for the torso and limbs as well as coverings for the hands (gloves), feet (socks, shoes, sandals, boots), and head (hats, caps). People almost universally wear clothing, which is also known as dress, garments, attire, or apparel. People wear clothing for functional as well as for social reasons. Clothing protects the vulnerable nude human body from the extremes of weather, other features of our environment, and safety reasons. Every article of clothing also carries a cultural and social meaning. Human beings are the only mammals known to wear clothing, with the exception of human pets clothed by their owners.
Western fashion has, to a certain extent, become an international fashion, as Western media and styles penetrate all parts of the world. Very few parts of the world remain where people do not wear items of cheap, mass-produced Western clothing. Even people in poor countries can afford used clothing from richer Western countries.
